Langara College students and faculty are taking a stand against gangs by inviting the community to participate in an open dialogue to find solutions.

Langara College will be hosting a forum on The Gang Issue: Tackling the complexities, hearing testimonies and finding solutions.

Honorable Wally Oppal, Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism, Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu and West Vancouver Police Chief Kash Heed will be in attendance, along with social activists, researchers, journalists, and victims.

The moderators will be Langara Sociology Instructor Indira Prahst and Asian Pulse TV Producer/Host Kamilla Singh.

“The essence of the forum embraces Langara College’s vision statement Freedom Through Knowledge,” says Indira Prasht, Sociology Instructor at Langara College, and Event Coordinator. “Combating the world of drugs and gangs is indeed a complex initiative and requires a proactive and multifaceted approach to the problem.

Debunking the glorified representations of gang life, soliciting more parental support, role models and community-based initiatives are all part of the solution to tackle this complex problem.”

“We need to be vigilant,” says Oppal, “and we must tackle the issue on various fronts.” The Forum’s goal is to foster greater understanding, to empower youth and parents and provide a knowledge base for educators, law enforcement agencies, service providers, and policy makers through knowledge translation and solutions.

“With the recent serious gang related incidents we needed to react quickly and send a message to gangsters that we are taking law enforcement action to stop that violence,” says Chu.

“Gang violence is destroying our communities - instilling fear in families, impacting honest businesses, and threatening innocent bystanders,” says Heed. “Coordinated intelligence gathering after the fact is never as valuable as collaborative strategies focused on prevention.” The forum, scheduled this week is supported by: the Government of British Columbia, Vancouver Police Department, West Vancouver Police Department, CBC, Channel M, Georgia Straight, The Voice, Asian Pulse, CKNW, and AM1550.
