Salmon stars at festival on Canada Day

Since 1945, Steveston has been coming alive with red and white to celebrate Canada Day. The people of Steveston come together annually to mark Canada’s birthday and the rich heritage of their community.

More than 75,000 people from across Richmond, Metro Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest enjoy the fun day of festivities for the entire family.

This year the day starts off with a hearty pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m., followed by a parade through the historic village at 10 a.m. The parade features more than 100 entries including floats, marching bands and celebrities. The official Opening Ceremonies start on the Main Stage at 12:30 p.m. with dignitaries, speeches and the singing of "O Canada."

The stage then becomes a platform for entertainment all afternoon. Festival highlights include the Japanese Cultural Show, craft fair, a children’s festival, carnival rides, martial arts demonstrations, belt sander drag races, a youth festival, multi-ethnic food fair and an art show and exhibit.

Due to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and the generous support of sponsors, the Steveston Community Society is able to organize one of the largest non-profit Canada Day celebrations in the country.

The main attraction is the famous salmon barbecue which serves more than 1,200 pounds of wild salmon filets grilled over open fire pits. This popular treat sells out every year.
