Pakistani cricket star-turned politician to visit Surrey

The Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-i-insaaf (PTI), Imran Khan, will be in Surrey on Aug. 11 to give a talk that will provide insight into Pakistan’s political scenario and the role of PTI in Pakistan.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. and will include a dinner, speech and a question and answer session with Khan.

Khan played for the Pakistani cricket team from 1971 to 1992, and led them as captain to his country’s first and only World Cup victory in 1992. Khan is known as one of the finest all-rounders in the modern history of the game.

In April 1996, he founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (Movement for Justice), a small, marginal political party of which he is chairman and the sole member ever elected to Parliament. He represented Mianwali as a member of the National Assembly from October 2002 to October 2007.

Inspired by the memory of his mother, who died of cancer, Khan established Pakistan’s first and only cancer hospital, built using donations and funds of more than $25 million, raised by Khan from all over the world. The Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, a charitable cancer hospital, opened in Lahore on December 29, 1994.

Khan is now working towards establishing a technical college in the Mianwali District, called Namal College, with the collaboration of University of Bradford in the UK.

The event on Aug. 11 is part of Khan’s North American tour and includes a fundraiser dinner for Namal College.

The event will provide an opportunity to meet, talk and listen to Khan speak of the political situation in Pakistan, and to learn more about his social contributions.
