Asian culture celebrated in concerts

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission Folk Arts in the Parks Program invites the American and Canadian public to Peace Arch State Park to attend a series of Sunday afternoon concerts celebrating Asian cultures of the Pacific Northwest. All concerts are free.

The remaining two concerts are Sunday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m., featuring Roger Del Rosario and the Filipiniana Dance Company, and Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m., featuring the music and dance ensemble of the Morning Star Korean Cultural Center.

The Seattle-area Filipiniana Dance Company, led by Roger Del Rosario, performs the music and dance of the Philippines. Filipiniana’s repertoire reflects the many cultures of the island nation, from the mountain tribes of the inland north, to the Spanish-influenced cultures of the coastal cities, to the Muslim cultures of the southern islands.

The Morning Star Korean Cultural Center is in Lynnwood, Washington. Drawing from performers of Korean heritage around the Puget Sound region, Morning Star was founded in 1985 by Jiyeon Cheh, to teach Korean dance, music and culture to children of Korean descent.

The Peace Arch State Park is located adjacent to the Peace Arch Port of Entry, where Interstate 5 and British Columbia Highway 99 connect.

It can be accessed from the American side off of north or south bound I-5 Exit 276, and from the Canadian side through Peace Arch Provincial Park, from Highway 99’s Beach Avenue exit. The international park is about 40 kilometres south of Vancouver.

This concert series is part of a broader series of events celebrating Washington’s diverse cultures.

The events are accessible to persons with disabilities.
