Fashion designers Manish Arora

Fashion designers Manish Arora, Anamika Khanna and Rajesh Pratap Singh are ready to set Paris Fashion Week ablaze under their own labels — a sign of India’s growing presence in the crowded international arena.

Anamika and Manish will showcase their creative brilliance at this fall’s fashion extravaganza, while Rajesh will roll out his collection at next year’s event.

So far, Indian designers have been displaying their collections abroad under the labels of foreign fashion houses or retail chains.

“It’s a great moment of glory,” Fashion Design Council of India’s (FDCI) Rathi Vinay Jha said at a recent press conference.

“For the first time, our designers will showcase their collections under their own labels. India will be there in its original form.”

FDCI, which organises the highly acclaimed Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, has facilitated the Indian designers’ participation in Paris.

“I have exhibited at the London Fashion Week but my dream was to showcase at the Paris Fashion Week. Now it has materialised and the credit for it goes to FDCI,” Manish said.

“FDCI has provided us all possible support, be it financial or emotional. It feels as if a family is sending its three kids for an extremely important examination,” the overwhelmed designer maintained.

Manish’s line for Paris has been inspired by the 1970s and his palette is loaded with colour.

Anamika, who will showcase 35 outfits, admitted to being a trifle jittery.

“It’s a little unnerving but I’m up to it,” she said.

Her palette comprises strong Indian colours — but stripped of their intensity.

“I am not taking ethnic India abroad. Instead, I will display the sexy and contemporary India,” she said of her collection.

Rajesh was equally thrilled, even though it will be year before he participates.

“It is amazing that in such a short span of time FDCI and the fashion fraternity of India has achieved so much,” he said.
