A blend of new sounds

Amy Stephen and

Amir Haghighi
An astounding collection of experience and ability will be brought to life in a unique musical show amptly titled Music for a New World.

The Vancouver World Music Collective is a one of a kind partnership blending musical styles and influences from around the world. This incredible collaboration brings together 17 of Vancouver’s best world music artists centred on a spirit of cooperation and collaboration.

Artists from the Collective came together to create a new piece of music entitled Music for a New World, celebrating the diversity of world music.

The Collective artists involved are familiar to many Vancouverites as some of the most gifted musicians in the city, each bringing years of composing, performing, recording and teaching trans-cultural collaboration to this project. This concert will include Amy Stephen and Amir Haghighi, Khac Chi, the Orchid Ensemble, Silk Road and Tzimmes.

Together their music draws from, Irish, Chinese, Vietnamese, West African and Jewish roots. Performances include everything from ancient traditional music, to jazz, Celtic, several Latin styles, contemporary songs, as well as new music.

Stephen is a versatile performer, composer, arranger and producer. She has toured internationally from Europe to Japan at festivals and concert series playing traditional celtic and original material since 1995.

Sweet vocals and excellent songwriting characterize Amy’s work. A multi-instrumentalist playing piano, harp, accordion, penny whistle, the richness of the music is brightened with her celtic inflections and touches of emotion.

Haghighi’s voice often compared by listeners to that of Persian and western masters. Amir was born and raised in Tehran, Iran where he learned the traditional Persian style of singing, performing throughout North America and Europe at Persian events since he moved to Canada in 1983.

Tickets for Music for a New World are available at the Centennial Theatre Box Office at 2300 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver.
