Saab 9-2X High Performance

If the Saab 9-2X looks familiar, it’s because it is based on the Subaru Impreza wagon. The thinking behind the 9-2CX is to enter that segment where enthusiasts are prepared to pay good money for slightly esoteric, high performance vehicles where engineering and performance not snob appeal is paramount.

Two engines are available for the 9-2X: a naturally aspirated, 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder rated for 165 horsepower on the base linear model, and a 227-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four on the Aero model. Inside, the 9-2X is clad in faux-aluminum trim and features neat, colorful interior. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, while the dashboard is essentially Subaru-based.

On the highway, the 9-2X ride is softer sprung and a little more comfortable than the Subaru Impreza. However not all the fun quotient has been taken out. The Saabs small wheel base and sharp, taut steering still provided enough of a sporty experience on curves and S-bends.

Grip, road holding and handling are very good; nothing upsets the Saab’s composure as it acquits itself with aplomb in everyday driving situations. Find some empty bends and some tight curves and it’s pretty entertaining.

In short, the Saab 9-2x is a very creditable alternative to those seeking a versatile, smaller entry level sporty Saab and need all-wheel drive.

Price starts at $28,950 for the linear model and $37,735 for the Aero.
