Malaysian Greens are a golfer's paradise

Saujana Golf Course

Malaysia is truly unique in many ways, none more so than as a golfing destination, with a diversity of courses unrivalled in the world.

The country is a golfing hotbed with over 200 courses and you can either enjoy a round in the cool hills or play by the sea or near the tea plantations.

A number of courses have been designed by some of golf’s top names, both designers and golfers. Top names like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Greg Norman, Peter Thompson, Ronald Fream. Robert Trent Jones, Ross Watson, J.Michael Poellot, and Max Wexler, have brought out the best features of the local environment whilst incorporating their own unique styles and features.

This is one of the reasons for the tremendous variety of courses throughout Malaysia, a range that no true golfing enthusiast can resist.

The visiting golfer will play on a variety of surfaces and grasses, including Cowgrass on the older courses and Serangoon or Bermuda Tifway covering the greens.

Most of the newer courses feature the popular warm weather favourite Bermuda Tifway on the fairways and rough, and Bermuda Tifdwarf on the greens.

Tourism Malaysia organizes the highly successful World Amateur Inter-Team Golf Championship. The annual tournament brings together amateur golfers from all over the world to play in some of the best courses in Malaysia as well as to savour the sights and sounds of this fascinating country.

Two of the top courses in the country are the Mines Resort Golf & Country Club and Saujana Golf & Country Club, both of which offer the very best in luxury - both on and off the course!

The former is part of the magnificent Mines Resort City. Dubbed the "Seven Wonders of Malaysia," it sprawls over 1,000 acres and has been crafted from the world’s largest open cast tin mine.

Situated less than half an hour from the centre of Kuala Lumpur and just over 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the Mines Resort Golf & Country Club course was designed by Robert Trent Jones.

It earned exposure all over the globe in 1999 when staging the World Cup of Golf - Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara lifted the title for the United States - and has since hosted the Malaysian Open.

Saujana Golf & Country Club is another gem, this particular one having been designed by Ronald Fream. Bukit Unggul Country Club in Selangor is another Fream creation and here he has cleverly used the natural terrain of the valleys and hills to produce a challenging yet enjoyable adventure.

Trent Jones designed Bukit Jambul Country Club in Penang and the tenth hole on this course has been described as the "most beautiful in Malaysia."

Desaru Golf & Country Club is also the work of Trent Jones and has been carved out of 300 acres of forestland bordering the beaches of the South China Sea.

Other courses worth a visit include Bangi Golf Resort in Selangor and Fraser’s Hill Golf & County Club in Pahang, where the course was designed by Rodger Davis, the colourful Australian professional.

Add to this Malaysia’s excellent road system and transportation, including frequent international flights and connecting flights between all major cities, it is easy to reach the best of the country’s courses for a typically Malaysian golfing experience par excellence.

The success of such tournaments and the increasing popularity of golfing holidays in Malaysia demonstrates that this type of holiday is becoming a major attraction, and the spectacular settings and superb facilities make Malaysia a haven for golfers of all standards.

As well as offering spectacular scenery many of these courses are equipped with superb facilities and amenities, all provided to make your golfing a complete and unforgettable experience.
