Flying Frank under fire

Fiji’s coup-installed leader is being criticized for his jet-setting lifestyle.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who seized power in a military coup in December 2006, has come under fire after revealing he will be visiting China for the Olympics.

It will be Bainimarama’s sixth trip abroad this year, and comes after visits to India, Dubai, Singapore, Vanuatu and Tonga.

Fiji’s ousted opposition leader Mick Beddoes told the Fiji Times the military regime did not represent the people, and should not officiate on behalf of the state.

"Participating in these engagements when you know full well that you hold the position as a result of an act of treason ... is for me questionable," he told the newspaper.

A spokesman for the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua party, which ruled Fiji before the coup, said Bainimarama had no regard for the welfare of people in his country.

"Him having the audacity to do those six trips in the last seven months goes to show that the actions he took was to benefit himself," he said.

Last month, Bainimarama was criticized by unions after the Ministry of Finance awarded him nearly $130,000 in back pay it said he was owed since 1978.
