Asia Pacific Trade Council

VANCOUVER - The provincial government has received the Asia Pacific Trade Council's second report, prepared by the India Market Advisory Group.

"B.C. has deep economic and social ties with India and, as its economy continues to grow and B.C. continues to establish itself as Canada's Pacific Gateway, it's clear we can do more to build on those ties and strengthen our economic relationship," said Premier Gordon Campbell. "B.C.'s South Asian community gives us a strong connection with India, and we share a language for business, a role as a strategic trade gateway, and common sectors such as biotechnology, education, tourism and power technologies."

Launched in September 2005, the Asia Pacific Trade Council is charged with making recommendations on how to increase investment and trade with the Asia Pacific region and better position B.C. as Canada's Pacific Gateway. Under the trade council's guidance, market advisory groups are being established to look at specific regions in the Asia Pacific. The first report, from the China/Hong Kong Market Advisory Group, was released in July 2006.

"We have been very fortunate to have the leadership of Dr. Arun Garg along with the talent and dedication of the members of the India Market Advisory Group," said Asia Pacific Trade Council chair Arthur Hara. "This second report provides very focused and specific recommendations for the vast and complex Indian market."

"The recommendations of this second report reflect the unique set of circumstances of the Indian market, and will further shape our strategy in the region," said Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen. "The report's theme, 'flow of people and knowledge,' will help focus our trade opportunities in India to highlight B.C.'s comparative advantages there."

The India Market Advisory Group Report's recommendations focus on leveraging B.C.'s comparative advantage in the flow of people and knowledge. It also recommends that the Province establish a B.C. presence in India to build durable relationships. Of the recommendations, 10 are of overall strategic importance and 24 are industry sector-specific, with a focus on services.
