Move over kung-fu, here comes kalari payat

If you had made up your mind about putting your kids in either karate, kung-fu, hapkido or even judo classes, time to go back to the drawing board.
‘Kalari payat’ is South Indian martial arts - it means battlefield training - and it is now available in the Lower Mainland.
Buddhist monks as well as noblemen from the South Indian state of Kerala have been practicing this home-grown Indian style of jiu-jitsu for hundreds of years dating back to the 7th century AD.
While no kalari payat fighter has won a title in UFC (yet), that could change if Elenasiar (Eddy) Edward has his way.
He is kalari payat grand master who has recently began offering training to students here in the Lower Mainland.
Edward learned the skill in India from his father, and now has come to Vancouver via Singapore where he lived previously.
Kalari payat focuses on hand-to-hand combat, complex disarming techniques, high jumps and kicks, low stances, knuckle blows, and arm locks to deliver lethal blows.
