Delhi Eats treats crowds at Surrey Night Market

When was the last time you ate Mac & Cheese pakoras?
How about a Masala corndog, Badmaash Indian poutine, or an Oreo cookie gulab jamun?
Well take a metaphorical stroll down “New Delhi’s streets” with food pop-up Delhi Eats. Inspired by a true love for food mashups, the flavours range from spicy, sweet, tangy, tossed in with some surprising textures invented by the wickedly evil imagination of 2nd generation foodie and chef Jessie Lehail.
Delhi Eats epitomizes the snap, crackle and pop of the upstart Canadian street food culture daring to ask India’s culinary traditions for a dance.
Recently, the eatery collaborated with the BC Blueberry Council to create the world first ever Bhangra Burger that featured a samosa smashed between a pickled slaw, an airy bun, and a savoury BC Blueberry Ginger Chutney.
Everything about Delhi Eats is a hybrid: the people, the culture, and especially the food. As with the other great street-inspired food found in India, the secret is in the narrowly focused menu, a rabid devotion to the subtle and complicated combinations of Indian and western ingredients, and a commitment to the culinary traditions of street food.
Lehail is quick to pay homage to her parents, especially her mom, who is a fantastic cook. “My love affair with everything South Asian is sourced and connected to my parents. Their fundamental rule in any endeavour has been to forge ahead, but to remain culturally connected. As a result, so many of my family memories are rooted in food and stories, especially since my Mom and Dad are amazing hosts.”
Delhi Eats’ is crewed by Lehail and her sister, a friendly bunch, happy to supply chit-chat and gup-shup with anyone dropping by.
Delhi Eats is located at the Surrey Night Market (17726 – 62 Avenue), every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 6 to 11PM.
