VISAFF goes Bollywood and beyond

The Vancouver International South Asian Film Festival and Nanak Foods recently unveiled VISAFF 2015’s program and campaign - Bollywood & Beyond on September 30 at Aria Banquet Hall in Surrey.
The annual festival celebrates the best in contemporary South Asian cinema from around the world. VISAFF 2015 screens from November 27 to 29, 2015 in Vancouver at SFU Woodwards Goldcorp Centre.
“VISAFF’s 2015 programming is a diverse collection of new independent voices all linked by South Asian culture,” stated VISAFF Co-Producer, Jessie Lehail.
“This year’s films take a creative approach to incredible film creatives, current events and contemporary issues. We’re also excited to shine a spotlight on South Asian features, documentaries, and shorts by Canadian and global filmmakers.

VISAFF’s opening film is the Canadian premiere of Anurag Kashyap’s dark psychological thriller, Ugly. Kashyap is an Indian filmmaker who has directed critically acclaimed features like The Lunchbox, and The Gangs of Wasseypur, Parts 1 and 2.
The festival will host the North American Premiere, of acclaimed movie, Zubaan, a coming-of-age musical drama about a Punjabi boy whose ambitious circle around becoming a musician. 
It will also showcase a Pakistani film (Dukhtar), in which a mother sets out to rescue her 10-year-old daughter from an arranged marriage.
Other films include Dheeyan Marjania which covers female foeticide and Journey of a Dream, a feature length ‘rockumentary’ which combines heavy metal music, exile, Buddhism and Tibetan culture.
The festival closes with the comedy Miss India America and digs at the desire we have, dormant and active, to be the ones to take home the tiara.
VISAFF 2015 includes more than seven feature films and close to 20 shorts and documentaries, an opening gala, a festival workshop with Bollywood’s famed director Anurag Kashyap, creative morning with industry heavyweights and a panel discussion.
