Speaking up about violence against women

A new play, being presented at the York Theatre from Nov. 3 - 14, is breaking the silence on violence against women.
The Cultch and Diwali Fest are partners in presenting the play.
Nirbhaya follows a young woman boarding a bus in Delhi heading for home on December 16, 2012. What follows are personal testimonies of violence and survival of women. Nirbhaya is based on life experiences of women’s stories about abuse.
“The play is particularly relevant to the situation we currently have in British Columbia where, because of systemic silence, many women across the province have gone missing over the years, yet these crimes have been ignored and in some cases, deliberately silenced,” says Heather Redfern, Executive Director of The Cultch.
Redfern thinks society is responsible for breaking the silence.
“Seeing this play together is one action we can take to make change for girls and women in our neighbourhoods and around the world.”
Nirbhaya premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2013. It won the Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award, which was given to an outstanding Fringe production that raises awareness for human rights, and the Scotsman Fringe First. The play also received the Herald Angel Award for “Outstanding New Play”.
On Nov. 4, 8, 10 performances, there will be a post-show question and answer session.
This production contains adult themes and mature content. Recommended for those age 16 and over.
Ticket prices start at $30. To purchase tickets, contact The Cultch’s Box Office at 604.251.1363, or visit  www.thecultch.com
