Sikhs donate blood to save lives

Vancouver, North Vancouver and Surrey had Sikhs donated 271 units of blood for the 16th annual Sikh Nation Blood Donation campaign on Nov. 7 and 8
Vancouver beat its target of 93 by four successful donations.
This campaign has helped save 104,000 Canadian lives since 1999. Sikh Nation has become Canadian Blood Services’ largest Partners for Life (PFL) donor group in the B.C. and Yukon region. In 2014, Sikh Nation donated approximately 2,300 units of blood and the Canadian Blood Services welcomed nearly 400 new donors.
The Sikh Nation Blood Donation campaign started 1999 to remember the victims of the genocide of Sikhs in Delhi in November of 1984.
“While we honour the victims of this horrific and horrible loss of innocent life in Delhi, we are undertaking a campaign to save lives, the lives of our fellow Canadians, who will directly benefit from the blood donated by the community.”, says Tera Singh of Sikh Nation.
In November 1984, over 8,000 Sikhs were killed as violent mobs targeted Sikhs living in Delhi and other parts of India. In December 2014, Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh called the 1984 incident a genocide.
