A different take on Bollywood's love stories

Bollywood has offered a variety of love stories in recent times. Here are some of the unconventional love stories which audiences had witnessed in recent times.

Padmaavat

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmaavat' saw a one-sided love story, where a cruel ruler falls for the incredible beauty of a queen. The film showed the unsaid, incomplete love story of Khilji. Deepika Padukone played the beautiful courageous queen Padmavati while Ranveer Singh played the antagonist. Shahid Kapoor played King Ratan Singh and the film turned out to be the biggest opener of the year 2018.

Zero

Anand L Rai's 'Zero' is all about a journey of finding out a true love story and completeness. The film shows SRK as a vertically challenged man who is apparently having difficulty in finding a life partner. He finds a companion in Anushka Sharma, a scientist with cerebral palsy. However, Katrina Kaif who plays an actress in the film also becomes close to him. Again an unconventional love story which is rarely seen in Bollywood.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

This film shows one such unexpected love stories of all time. It is an unconventional tale of finding love and acceptance. ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ follows the complicated love story of Sweety, played by Sonam Kapoor who has to contend with her over-enthusiastic family that wants to marry, a young writer who is smitten by her, a secret that she harbours close to her heart and ultimately the truth that her true love might not find acceptance in her family and society. The movie puts light on homosexuality and its acceptance in our Indian society.

Badhaai Ho

This was another quirky yet interesting film of 2018. The film tells the story of a middle-aged couple who get pregnant much to the disappointment of their adult son. The film showed a very pure and unsaid bond between parents which is never talked in the Indian society. ‘Badhaai Ho’ is a coming of age comedy family drama. In an age when parents expect to see grandkids, Ayushmann’s mother gets pregnant and his whole life turns upside down. Right from dealing with social embarrassment to coming to terms with his parents’ active sex life, the film is a total fun ride.

Raazi

Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Raazi’ showed Alia Bhatt as ‘Sehmat’ who played the role of an Indian spy who is married to a Pakistani officer played by Vicky Kaushal. The young actress not only impressed the audience with her convincing character but also with her outstanding performance in the film. While the movie completely focuses on Sehmat’s devotion towards her nation, there is an untold love story which has been revealed in the novel.
