South Asian comedy hits stage in New West

F is for Funny: The South Asian Edition features a seasoned South Asian troupe that includes comics that have performed at some of the biggest South Asian festivals in greater Vancouver, and across Canada and the United States as well as up and coming comedians. Ash Dhawan, Al Hassam, Simi, Mantaj Bain, Rajneesh Dhawan, Nazim Hasham, Ragini are the featured comics. The Emcee for the evening will be Janice Bannister.

These comics will share their unique takes on life as a South Asian person in the Lower Mainland and includes chronicles of their journeys from their homelands like Prince George and Abbotsford.

 

Ash Dhawan - Co-Headliner

Ash Dhawan is a comedian whose hilarious take on life as a single South Asian woman has captured audience’s attention across Canada over the last eight years.

She was the winner of Vancouver's Funniest comic with a Day Job contest in 2011, and the back to back winner of the 2014 & 2015 BC's Funniest Female contest.

She's an Engineer by day and a Comedian by night and has been embraced by the comedy community working with formidable comedians such as India's founding father of stand-up comedy, Johnny Lever.

 

Al Hassam - Co-Headliner

Like a lot of people from an Indian background, Al Hassam was raised in Prince George, British Columbia.

Performing comedy for over a decade His passion for comedy has lead him to perform in venues all North America.

He mixes knowledge of cultural, ethnicity and relationships as key ingredients in his stand-up routine. Al's quick wit leaves audiences delighted with laughter.

 

Simi - Featured Comic

Simi has been on stage in some capacity or another her entire life, while writing and comedy was always at the forefront of that passion.

A little over four years ago Simi took the YukYuks stage and within months was achieving successes she hadn’t imagined.

 

Mantaj Bains - Featured Comic

Mantaj (pronounced like Montage in English, different name used at Starbucks), is a recent graduate of SFU that loves comedy, acting and cancelled plans.

Bringing a young South Asian voice to the comedy scene in BC, Mantaj has gained quick success.

 

Rajneesh Dhawan- Featured Comic

Rajneesh Dhawan is a professor, playwright and a performer. He has more than 30 years of public speaking experience.

His latest comedy “Culture Shock” is under production and will be premiered this fall. In 2017, he returned to the stand-up comedy and since then he has won the Fraser Valley comedy competition twice.

Rajneesh is a regular performer with Fraser Valley Comedy and he has performed at multiple venues across the Lower Mainland.

 

Nazim Hasham- Featured Comic

Nazim Hasham, a comedy superstar in his own right, or is that his own head?

Whichever it is, Nazim offers a fresh funny commentary on everyday life, news and politics, sprinkled with personal experiences. He has performed in venues city-wide.

 

Ragini-Featured comic

Ragini was born to Indian parents, one from India and one from Fiji, and raised in Canada.

To further confuse matters, she married into a Punjabi family and learned what it was like to live in an extended family.

She has been entertaining people with her “foot in two cultures” stories, her people anecdotes, and her family stories since learning to talk.

Her husband says that even though she has been doing improv for years, she has yet to improve.
