CAREER
Age: 21
Occupation: Hairdresser
Company’s Name: AXIS Hair Salon and John Casablancas.
Hours each week: 40 hrs at the salon and 8 hrs at the School.
Salary: $30K per year.
Years of Position: 2 and half years for AXIS and I’ve been an educator at John Casablancas for 2 months and I spent 8 months apprentice teaching.
Best Part of your Career: I get to be creative and my training gives me the opportunity to work in any aspect of the hair, fashion, or movie industry. I get to work and be social with amazing people. I have fun at my job.
Inspiration: I’ve been cutting my own hair and my friends’ hair my whole life.
Challenges: I get to be creative but at same time I play with people’s self-image so I want to ensure that they will like the end result. It’s also difficult to work with clients who don’t know what they want, because it is tough to decide if they are going to like the style I create. Also I learn not to take it personally if people don’t like what I’ve done.
Differences: In a work environment, there’s no safety net where you are on your own because there aren’t teachers there to monitor. Plus you learn more when you are on your own.
EDUCATION
School & Degree(s): John Casablancas Hair-Training Diploma Program for 6 months, Kelowna Secondary School
Advice: Work hard, be creative and go to John Casablancas. It is a very modern program and it’s getting lots of recognition. It’s a passion for people who work there. All the things that they are teaching at John Casablancas are relevant to what is needed in the industry.
Program Benefits: Professionally, it gave me a career because prior to what I am doing I was in the service industry; for example, working at a coffee shop. Personally, now I get to teach and help people to grow and learn.
LIFESTYLE
Favorite activity: Singing Karaoke
Upcoming Vacation plans: Weekend at my family cabin
In five years, I see myself:
I would like to continue to be happy and do what I am doing by working hard. I feel it is important to have big goals, but most importantly to have smaller goals and reach them.
