Hawthorn-Vancouver Launches the new "Intensive Workplace Preparation Program"


At the end of March, Hawthorn-Vancouver is launching a brand new Intensive Workplace Preparation Program (IWPP). This four-week program is designed for Internship students, students on Working Holiday Visas, and new immigrants to Canada. This program will prepare students to enter the Canadian workforce armed with valuable skills that will enable them to successfully performin their work placements. Students will complete 120 classroom hours of instruction and participate inindustry related field trips. Along with information about working in Canada and within Canadian culture, students will also obtain First Aid, Serving It Right, Super Host, and Food Safe Training and Certifications. Students also have the options of continuing with further self-directed study in their field of interest and/or securing a guaranteed work placement. This dynamic program will prepare participants to communicate more effectively with co-workers and clients and take full advantage of the training offered in their workplace. Hawthorn-Vancouver launched their new English for Communication program in January 2006


The new English for Communication course is designed to challenge students at every level of their English studies. Integrated classes develop the students? speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. A wide range of topics, materials and activites keeps them motivated and interested. The innovative curriculum is based on Canadian language standards that are widely recognized. Each English for Communication stage has a set of core features.


Foundation 1 and 2



  •  A focus on learning essential communication skills
  •  Students build a strong language base that supports their future studies
  •  Practical, functional English for everyday situations
  •  Regular ?Social English? and ?Practice & Go? activities promote learning English outside the classroom

Competency 1, 2 and 3



  •  A focus on expanding and strengthening communication skills
  •  Student gain greater confidence as their English abilities grow
  •  A wider range of topics and situations is explored in more depth
  •  Students apply their new skills to stimulating class and group projects

Proficiency 1, 2 and 3



  •  A focus on refining communication skills
  •  Students become ready to interact in authentic English environments
  •  Students master the nuances of the English language
  •  Individual assignments, extended projects, and leadership roles provide opportunities to demonstrate English expertise
