Fashion show features ‘healing bra’

Bra boning, the inner lining of female undergarments used for support purposes, is considered the most uncomfortable part of the garment. But going against the tide, designer Rohit Bal has embraced the clothing element.

Bal showcased his collection ‘Ashta Dhatu,’ crafted out of boning, at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) ramp.

The tradition of Ashta Dhatu involves combining eight different metals for the purpose of creating a variety of aesthetic objects. Moreover, when worn on the body, the combination of these metals is believed to have miraculous healing properties.

In sync with the title, the creative expert’s collection offered eight three-dimensional dresses. Metallic narrow boning wires densely crisscrossed over black body suit to create volume or the blouson effect.

Wires were gathered on both sides of the waist to create the skirt. Also, wires crisscrossed to craft deep V-necks and their loops tucked at the waistline to create the blouson affect in the lower half of the dress. Similarly, there were one-shouldered long gowns. Asked where he drew inspiration from, Bal said: “Inspiration does not lie in a spot. It is beyond time, they are moving around everyone and it depends what sinks in. It is a long thought process. If you keep your mind open you never know what might seep in.

“If I have to zero in on one thing, it would be the iron pillar near Qutub Minar.”

Using metallic colours like gold, silver, iron, lead, tin, zinc, copper, mercury and handcrafted Gota, the line has corsets, armour skirts, quilted short jackets, jersey dress, ripple dresses and bone dresses of varied styles and sizes.

For men, the collection possesses trousers, shirts, long jackets, sherwanis and armour jackets.

Apart from boning, fabrics like chiffon, brocade, lame and jersey were also used.
Displayed in a hall jam-packed with viewers, the collection received thumbs up from the international buyers and global media persons, with many referring to it as “the grand finale.”
