Two Sikh American filmmakers have captured the enduring spirit of resistance of the families of farmers who have committed suicide due to rural plight.
A Little Revolution- A Story of Suicides and Dreams, follows the remarkable journey of children from the rural villages of Panjab to Delhi, the capital of India.
There the children and the filmmakers confront the government’s highest officials with the hope that they will understand the effects of their policies and work to help alleviate the suffering.
Farmer suicides continue to plague rural areas of India due in part to their limited finance options which leave them susceptible to loan sharks. They also face problems due to India’s pro-industrial farming policies, and increasing ecological damage.
Manmeet Singh is the producer of the film. His first film, The Widow Colony, won several international awards and was screened at the Parliament in UK in 2009.
Harpreet Kaur the director also shot The Widow Colony - India’s Unsettled Settlement, her debut feature documentary. The film takes an in-depth look into the lives of the widows of the Sikh men who were killed in the anti-Sikh massacre of November 1984. A journalist by trade, Kaur was the first Sikh local news reporter in the metro Washington DC area.
