A community-run Bollywood style musical production follows the journey of a father watching his daughter grow up into an adult. The musical takes place January 24 at Hard Rock Casino Theatre (2080 United Boulevard, Coquitlam) at 4 pm.
More than 100 volunteers, members of the Gujarati Society of British Columbia (GSBC) put on this performance, Laadki – The Musical. They worked on the production for six months.
“I am convinced that unity is indeed strength, and when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved,” says Rajan Raniga, President of GSBC.
GSBC is a completely volunteer run organization that preserves Gujarati cultural and linguistic heritage through events, arts, and education since 1967.
Laadki itself has over 200 volunteers.
The show’s star, Priyanka Patel, is pursuing her Masters in Psychology. She is also a dance veteran and local dance instructor with Shiamak Davar International.
“It’s different than our usual variety show in that each item is individual to the choreographer’s style. We all need to work together in one cohesive group, and 200 people is a lot of people to work with,” says Patel.
