A Vancouver company is shining brightly during this year’s Festival of Lights as its Diwali gift sets, candles and diyas are being snapped up on Amazon, propelling its products to the bestseller lists of the global digital online retailer.

“Our Jasmine scented Diya candles made in Vancouver with a custom blend of organic mustard oil and soy wax, are flying off the shelves,” said Harbinder Singh Sewak, the president and CEO of Alooatta, which specialises in an array of products made from natural ingredients sourced in British Columbia.

Topping the Amazon charts, are the Alooatta Diya sets used in festive prayers and home decorations during Diwali.

“Unfortunately we are out of our DIY Diwali Kits which have sold out,” said Sewak.

The all-inclusive Diwali Kit comes with a reusable Rangoli stencil, 6 colored rice powders, and 2 eye-catching Diwali diyas to fill your space with lights and colors.

Rangoli is an art form in which patterns are created on the floor or a tabletop using materials such as powdered lime stone, red ochre, dry rice flour, coloured sand, quartz powder, flower petals, and coloured rocks.

According to Alloatta’s master designer, Madu Dhasanayaka, the company’s diyas  are hit as it is eye-catching, durable, and long-lasting.

“It is clean burning with a cotton Diya wick and won't fill your room with smoke,” he said.

The company hit the headlines in 2019, when Sewak and Dhasanayaka collaborated to make a mega candle to commemorate the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak, the spiritual founder of Sikhism.

The Guru Nanak commemorative candle burned continuously for a symbolic 550 hours and is believed to be the longest burning candle ever made. It was poured by Dhasanayaka, who labored for more than 2,000 hours creating the work, which cost $25,000.

Alooatta, formed in 2017 specializes in eco-friendly gifts and is now working on festive sets for the Christmas period.
