New Westminster Hyack Festival

This weekend, the Hyack Festival Association presents the traditional Hyack Festival. Volunteers produce more than 60 family-oriented events for everyone.

The Festival starts at New Westminster's Royal City Centre at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Local dignitaries, Hyack representatives, the Miss New Westminister Ambassador and Leonard, the Royal City Lion will attend the official ribbon cutting at Centre Court.

The nine-day festival extravaganza starts with a colourful fireworks display over the Fraser River signalling the beginning of the Hyack Festival Fun.

The festival’s traditional antique fair is in the Queen's Park Arenex on Sunday, and Monday. General Admission to the fair is $2.

Seniors and children are free.

As part of the tradition since 1860, the Hyack Anvil Battery fires the "anvil salute" on Victoria Day at 12 noon in Queen's Park Stadium. Pre-show entertainment and speeches starts at 11:30 a.m.

The May Day Ceremony is the longest running celebration of its kind in the commonwealth. The May Queen and the Royal Knights are drawn from among the representatives elected by each elementary school.

On May 21, hundreds of elementary school students gather at Queen's Park Stadium for the traditional Maypole dances and witness the crowning of the May Queen.
