India first competed at the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 when alpine skier Jeremy Bujakowski was the country’s lone representative. He also competed in 1968 and then it was 20 years until India next appeared at the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, represented by three alpine skiers, two men, Gul Dev and Kishor Rahtna Rai, and one woman Shailaja Kumar.
India would not compete in the 1994 Lillehammer Games, returning in Nagano 1998 with one luger, Shiva Keshavan, a 16-year-old who finished 28th. He went on to compete in 2002 and 2006, where he placed 33rd and 25th.
In Turin 2006, Keshavan was part of India’s largest and most varied Olympic Winter Games team. Three men and one woman, Neha Ahuja competed in luge, alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. The country is yet to win an Olympic Winter Games medal.
