Van Fashion Week lights up the catwalk

Celebrating its eleventh year in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Fashion Week is back for its fall showcase.
The extravaganza which features both established and up-and-coming designers is taking place this week from Tuesday November 1st to Sunday November 6th.
Showings run throughout the day and take place at Masik Studio, 145 West 2nd Ave in Vancouver.
Founded by producer Jamal Abdourahman, Vancouver Fashion Week takes place bi-annually during spring and fall.
2010 attendees included Hollywood stars, such as Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, as well as Canadian music giants Sam Roberts and Alanis Morrisette.
The line-up for this week’s show includes a lineup of emerging international designers from Canada, Poland, Mexico, Korea, Brazil, Germany, India, Ireland, and more.
Here is a sample of some of the designers appearing in this year’s festival.

Wednesday November 2

Joseph Ribkoff - 6PM
Veteran Canadian designer Joseph Ribkoff (established1957) will lead off Vancouver Fashion Week. All of Ribkoff’s clothing is designed, sewn and produced in Canada (Dorval, Quebec), which is a remarkable feat in today’s fashion world. Today, Joseph Ribkoff proudly stands out as one of the leading exporters in the Canadian fashion industry. www.ribkoff.com

Kings & Paupers - 8PM
Stocked and distributed out of Vancouver, Kings & Paupers is an artisan based jeans company that focuses on producing quality denim attire one item at a time. With 15 years of experience in the premium denim manufacturing business, Jude Neale has set out to design distinctive styles, fashioned around the artist working on the jeans. Every piece is a work of art personally signed by the artists involved. Valerio Moda - 8PM
Vancouver based Ali Mokhtarian specialised in made to measure leather apparel and suits through his partnership in the Valerio Collection. Mokhtarian previously created “Hirad by Ali” which delivered high end leather fashion to men, women and children. Since establishing Hirad by Ali in 1996, he has designed customized creations for numerous clients. www.valeriomoda.com

Thursday November 3

Mackenzie Jones – 7:15PM
Megan Mackenzie Jones is a multi-media artist working in jewellery and alternative fashion. She has lived her life all over Alberta and is now a Calgary based artist. Flora and fauna, as well as memory and nostalgia are her main inspirations. www.jonesmodernvintage.com

Peter Nguyen - 8:50PM
Nguyen, who hails from Long Beach, California, has found inspiration recently in adapting men’s tailoring concepts into women’s clothing. In his recent collection he combines a mixture of feminine curves and masculine angles on a colour palette of neutral greys, nudes and dark green.

Friday November 4

Shilmel Zagvar Fashion Center - 7:50PM
Established in 1972, the “Shilmel Zagvar” is the first fashion center in Mongolia. The Centre introduces Mongolian fashions through the preservation of its traditional heritage, and fusion of these styles with modern fashion designs. www.shilmelzagvar.mn

Farida Lalji - 8:30PM
Farida Lalji’s spring/summer 2012 collection of Mughal- era formal wear features fabrics, colours and silhouettes including silks, chiffons, georgettes, velvets and brocades. While the colours include bright as well as deep shades, the silhouettes are feminine and flowy, incorporating A-line and empire waists. www.faridalalji.com

Eva Chen - 9:15PM
Eva Chen grew up in an artistic family. She has studied Erhu (Chinese traditional music instrument), singing, dancing and drawing since she was six. She has worked as a fashion designer for the collections in several countries including the United States, Singapore and China. Her trademark colors and patterns make her designs stand out and she is able to create distinctive designs and transform them into elegant yet edgy pieces. www.evachen.co

Saturday November 5
Rajadano - 6:20PM
Rajadano ‘s aims to contribute to the revival of ethnic handcrafts, bringing history’s vibrant cultures within reach of the modern day fahionista. Our one-of-a-kind handbags portray the beauty and individuality of a different ethnic group’s cultural heritage each year. Each collections will be limited to 107 serial numbered bags. Rimi Nayak - 8:45PM
Rimi Nayak, who is based Kolkata, India, started her own women’s line in 2008 and launched it at the prestigious Lakme Fashion Week in her country.
Rimi combines traditional as well as contemporary Indian elements. She focuses on craft revival and has been working with the very conventional ‘batik’ for many years. www.riminayak.com

Sunday November 6
Rajat Tangri - 7PM
Born in India, Rajat Tangri launched his fashion line in 2005 with his own eponymously-named label. Rajat’s designs project an artistic inspiration with a fusion of Indian design philosophy & technique with the west’s concept of product and design.
